Walk-In Tubs in Los Angeles

Who doesn’t like a long, therapeutic soak in the tub after a long day? Unfortunately for those with limited mobility, it can often be difficult to climb into a slippery bathtub. For some, it may even take away their independence.

It’s time to stop stressing over the dangers of getting into a bathtub. With a walk in tub, you get the perks of a comfortable bath as well as a home upgrade. A walk-in tub combines safety, comfort and peace of mind that you can’t get from any other bathtub. Being able to independently get in and out of the tub while enjoying a comfortable soak is a luxury that a regular bathtub or shower cannot provide. Not only that, but the fact that you can safely get in and out of the bath is relaxing to your mind. You know you or a loved one can bathe without worries.

Is a walk-in tub right for you?

How does a walk-in tub work?

A walk-in tub is a bathtub with a watertight door. The bather steps into the tub over a low threshold. The door closes. Then, the tub fills with water. After your soak, you simply drain the bath and open the door when it’s all clear.

Many models are taller than they are wide, but there are many different models and configurations available to meet your needs and bathroom. For example, there are walk-in tubs available for an easy transfer from a wheelchair to the tub seat.

How comfortable is a walk-in tub?

Because you don’t need to step over a tall wall, walk-in tubs actually have a deeper water depth than traditional bathtubs. A standard bathtub has a depth of 13 to 14 inches. Walk-in tubs can hold nearly four feet of water for a comfortable immersion experience while securely seated.  Seats are generally placed at 17 inches, leaving plenty of water to soak in. Many walk-in models also have hydrotherapy jets available and other luxury features, such as heated backrests and seating, a hand shower, and a fast drain.

How long does it take to fill a walk-in tub? Because a walk-in tub has a side door, you can’t add or drain water while the door is open. You have to sit in the tub while it is filling up and draining. It may take as long as 15 minutes for a tub to fill or drain. However, high-end models have features to speed up the process to about 8 minutes. You can also purchase a model with a heated seat if you are concerned with getting a chill while waiting for your tub to fill or drain.

Is a walk-in tub safe?

In a word…yes!

Walk-in tubs provide an array of features designed to reduce falls. With over one-third of adults over the age of 65 suffering from falls and 80% of those falls in bathrooms, this is an important design feature.

Walk-in tubs often have an ADA compliant design overall, including built-in handrails, anti-slip flooring, contoured seating and a low step height for entry. Some tubs also include wide doors so that those in wheelchairs can easily transfer from wheelchair to tub seat without assistance.

While not related to falls, another safety feature is called a scald prevention valve. This is designed to prevent hot water burns.

Does a walk-in tub use a lot of water?

Here is California, water is a major concern. So you may be thinking that with a deeper tub, more water will be needed. However, this isn’t necessarily the case. Many walk-in tubs are actually more narrow than standard tubs. Than means that many walk-in tubs don’t use much more water than a standard tub. In fact, a standard bathtub generally can hold 42-80 gallons of water, while a walk-in tub holds 50 gallons.

Many walk-in tubs have heating systems that circulate the water to keep it warm, so you don’t have to keep refilling the tub to keep it warm.

I’m sold! How much does a walk-in tub cost?

Prices vary for the walk-in tub, depending on how many features you want to include. Some models offer many features all in one package -- such as over tub seas, add-on handrails, anti-scald valves, and non-stick flooring. If you purchase a model with all these features, you can actually save money. How? You won’t have to pay to make those modifications in your bathroom or to the tub.

Overall the base price of a basic walk-in tub is about $1,000, but they can be as high as $5,000, depending on how many features they include. You also have to consider the installation costs. These can vary depending on the complexity of the construction needed to install your tub. It may seem pricey, but can you put a price on your peace of mind?
